L. Dwight Schwartz
Hall of Honor

Born in Oklahoma in 1925, Dr. L. Dwight Schwartz graduated from the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1953 before receiving his master’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1963. During that time, he served as a ranch veterinarian, a Field Veterinarian/Area Livestock Inspector APHIS, USDA (1956), and Acting Poultry Inspector-in-Charge, FSIS, USDA (1959).

After receiving his master’s in microbiology, Dr. Schwartz started his professional career as a faculty member of Penn State from 1964 – 1984 before joining the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University from 1984 – 1993. Afterwards he spent the rest of his professional career as an avian health consultant.

He contributed heavily to the avian industry, particularly with avian health. During his retirement, Dr. Schwartz revised his Poultry Health Handbook into the 4th edition, as well as published the Grower’s Reference on Gamebird Health. Both aimed to help those working with poultry to understand the fundamental factors in disease prevention and how to control them. He also wrote chapters in books and articles for bulletins and trade journals.

He was a highly involved member of the American Association of Avian Pathologists, receiving the Lasher-Bottorf Award (1993) and Life Membership (1994). A caring and dedicated poultry pathologist, he helped train and mentor many veterinary students during his long and distinguished career. AAAP honored his efforts by creating the L. Dwight Schwartz Travel Scholarship to help outstanding students attend the AAAP Annual Meeting. The first scholarship was presented in 2002.

Dr. Schwartz’s other recognition includes the Extension Veterinarian of the Year award (1986), the Poultry Industry Leader award (1991) from the Michigan Allied Poultry Industry, and an Honor Roll Member of the AVMA (1996).

Dr. Schwartz passed away in 2000.
