History of the Front Covers of Avian Diseases
The journal Avian Diseases was started in 1957 with Dr. P.P. Levine as editor. A detailed history of the journal can be found in the history paper by Dr. Bruce W. Calnek (Calnek, Bruce W. Avian Diseases: The Creation and Evolution of P. Philip Levine's Enduring Gift, Avian Dis. 59:1-6. 2015). Soon after Dr. Jagdev Sharma became Editor of Avian Diseases in 2004, he started to recognize distinguished poultry disease researchers on the cover of Avian Diseases with a short description of the person on the inside of the cover. The first cover was dedicated to Dr. P.P. Levine (volume 49, issue 1, 2005). Initially only deceased researchers were featured, but this was changed in 2023 to include retired researchers. The covers are presented in the section “Avian Diseases covers” with a link to (auto)biographies if available. The History of Avian Medicine Committee with the Editor-in-Chief of Avian Diseases are responsible for the selection of the covers and welcome suggestions from the membership.
