The purpose of the externship scholarship is to enable interested veterinary students to participate in poultry medicine training programs in order to expand their education, training, and veterinary skills through practical experience in their specialized field. The Foundation annually offers individual awards of up to $1,300.00 to veterinary students to help them defray housing, living and travel expenses incurred while attending poultry medicine training programs under the auspices of their veterinary medical schools. Eligible students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of study at an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine located in the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean Islands. The AAAP has solicited the cooperation of its members in establishing a variety of training sites including universities, diagnostic laboratories, poultry production companies and poultry breeding companies. Dr. Kenneth H. Eskelund initiated the AAAP Foundation Externship Program in 1988 along with a fund that still supports the program. In addition, the AAAP Foundation is fortunate to partner with several companies and an association to provide externship scholarships. This has allowed the program to grow considerably. Many thanks to:
Aviagen
Alltech
Association of Veterinarians in Egg Production
Huvepharma Southern Poultry Research Group, Inc.
L. Dwight Schwartz Travel Scholarship The AAAP annually selects an outstanding student(s) to receive the L. Dwight Schwartz Travel Scholarship to attend the Avian Medicine Section of the Annual Meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The purpose of the award is to introduce veterinary students to the many aspects of poultry medicine and to facilitate their interaction with research scientists, poultry diagnosticians, and clinical poultry veterinarians who would further their education and training.
Dr. L. Dwight Schwartz, a Life Member of AAAP, is responsible for creating this scholarship and the original fund. The fund has since been supported by AAAP members and the Schwartz family and friends in memory of Dr. Schwartz.
AAAP Foundation/Merck Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship The AAAP Foundation and Merck Animal Health are dedicated to promoting scientific knowledge for the health and well-being of poultry and a safe food supply as well as supporting outstanding veterinary students. Merck Animal Health is proud to demonstrate its dedication to veterinary students by providing $50,000 in financial support to award ten second and third year students with $5,000 scholarships. Merck’s partnership with the AAAP Foundation helps to achieve the Foundation’s goal of assisting students with financial support to encourage a career track in poultry health and well being, or food safety.
AAAP Foundation/Elanco Memorial Scholarship The AAAP Foundation is pleased to partner with Elanco to offer two Elanco Memorial Scholarships each year. These scholarships are intended to honor the memory of past Elanco poultry veterinarians and scientists by supporting learning opportunities for future generations. One undergraduate student will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship, while a $3,000 scholarship will be presented to a veterinary student interested in poultry medicine.
AAAP Foundation/Cobb Scholarship
The AAAP Foundation appreciates the support of Cobb to offer the AAAP Foundation/Cobb Scholarship. One $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a 3rd or 4th year veterinary student interested in poultry medicine, currently enrolled and in good standing at an AVMA accredited and recognized school of veterinary medicine.
Avian Biosciences Travel Scholarships
Avian Biosciences Travel Scholarships are meant to address the needs of students who are enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy program, and who do not hold a veterinary degree. While these students can secure funding for their education, they often need funds to present their research at the AAAP Annual Meeting. These scholarships will encourage those students to continue a career track in poultry health.
