AVMA Governmental Relations Student Externship Program

The AVMA extern program pairs talented veterinary students with the AVMA Government Relations Division for a four-week program that introduces the breadth of public policy issues facing our profession and provides hands-on lobbying experience with Capitol Hill legislators and staff.

Externs discover the scope of veterinary medicine in the various branches of government while expanding your understanding of the legislative process and the veterinarian's role in that process.  It's an opportunity to learn a facet of the profession that you won't find in school – and make a difference in shaping the profession.

AVMA provides a $1,200 stipend for each government relations extern.

AVMA Annual Legislative Fly-In

The AVMA regularly hosts legislative fly-in events that bring veterinarians and veterinary students to Washington, D.C., for hands-on advocacy experience. Participants receive in-depth briefings about the top policy issues affecting veterinary medicine and meet with their members of Congress to advocate on those issues. These important events ensure that the voice of the veterinary profession is amplified on Capitol Hill.

Fly-in participants also learn how to develop relationships with their elected officials and become trusted voices of veterinary medicine. In this way, the fly-ins showcase the many ways in which AVMA and SAVMA members can use our veterinary expertise to shape public policy.
