Dear AAAP Members,
As I sat down to write our Spring newsletter, the snow has melted, and spring is upon us once more. Here's hoping this letter brings with it a little good luck and some warmer temperatures! Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone for their generous personal and corporate gifts over the last year. The Foundation is in strong financial standing thanks to the support of our membership.
None of the work of our Foundation could be done without the steadfast leadership of our members who volunteer their time and energy to support the next generation through scholarships, externships, and awards, as well as recognize those outstanding members who lead the way in research and service.

Raffle tickets are $10 each or 5 tickets for $40. All proceeds from the raffle will go to fund AAAP scholarships. Winners will be drawn at 1pm PST on July 31st. Winners will be announced on the AAAP website and also notified via email.
If you or your company is interested in sponsoring an additional item to the raffle, please contact Lisa Tenny at [email protected] by May 2.

Do not miss the 2025 BioOne Ambassador Awards Nominees. Now in its eighth year, the BioOne Ambassador Awards recognize early-career researchers who demonstrate creative approaches to communicating their specialized scientific research to the general public. By making scientific research more accessible to a wide audience, these researchers encourage greater scientific literacy and aid in the broader understanding of our natural world.
This year the AAAP has nominated 3 early career researchers.
These articles are in the free-to-read portion of the collection.
Sydney Kinstler Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis Impacts Developmental Notch and Wnt Signaling and Intestinal Morphology in the Small Intestine of Broiler Chickens 68(4): 299-313
Camila Cuadrado Protection Against Infectious Bronchitis Virus Vaccine Recombinants and Chicken-Selected Vaccine Subpopulations 68(2): 89-98
Hemlata Gautam Protection of Broiler Chickens Against Necrotic Enteritis by Intrapulmonary Delivery of a Live Clostridium perfringens Vaccine Exploiting the Gut-Lung–Axis Concept 68(3): 240-253

AAAP is excited for the multiple webinars we have planned in 2025! In April, we have a webinar organized by the Respiratory Diseases Committee titled “The Challenges and Promises of IBV Serotyping with qPCR and Sequencing.” Drs. Rodrigo Gallardo and Brian Jordan have vast research and diagnostic laboratory experience utilizing qPCR and first- and next-generation sequencing techniques, and Dr. TJ Gaydos has ample field experience in using this data to develop IB control programs. We begin this explainer on April 21st at 1:00 PM EST and look forward to providing a better understanding of what the current IBV typing methods can tell us and where diagnostic services may be going from here. Q&A to follow.
In May, we have a webinar organized by the Emerging Diseases Committee titled "Enterococcus cecorum review: A few answers and more questions," coming up on May 12 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST. This webinar is to offer members a timely update into the ongoing Enterococcus cecorum industry challenge. Dr. M. Mitsu Suyemoto joins the committee on May 12th to discuss the pathogenesis of E. cecorum. Mitsu Suyemoto has researched Bacterial Pathogenesis and Molecular Genetics at NCSU for the past 17 years as a Research Specialist, with much of this time devoted to Enterococcus cecorum in the Borst laboratory. She joins the Emerging Diseases Committee to speak on the subject of what we know of, and future research needs into, the pathogenesis of Enterococcus cecorum. Q&A to follow.
Please click the button below to register! The webinars are $20 for AAAP members and $40 for nonmembers.

Entering 2025 means that I have now completed my first year as Editor in Chief of Avian Diseases. It has been an eventful first year, but it would not have been possible without the incredible support of my three Associate Editors (Drs. Silke Rautenschlein, David Swayne and Haroldo Toro) and the Advisory Board. I have also received a considerable amount of assistance from Bob Bevans-Kerr and Nathan Bevans-Kerr. Our ability to maintain a high scientific standard would not be possible without our reviewers who volunteer their time to help the journal. I will return to this point later in this update.
Avian Diseases published four issues in 2024, and the Special Issue for 2024 has just been fully released. The four regular issues included 24 Original Articles, 6 Research Notes, 10 Case Reports and 1 Review. The Special Issue included 7 Invited Reviews, 9 Original Articles, 1 Research Note and 3 Case Reports. The entire issue was published Open Access, which should enhance the visibility of the articles we publish in Avian Diseases.
The Special Issue for 2025 will focus on avian metapneumovirus. If you have a research study or a case report related to this topic, please consider submitting it for the Special Issue. You can contact me with any questions. We hope to receive all manuscripts for this Special Issue by June 30. Like the 2024 Special Issue, the entire issue will be published Open Access. Authors of all papers that are not Invited Reviews will pay the AAAP member rate for Open Access charges.

In order for AAAP to continue to be recognized as an allied veterinary association of the AVMA, we need your help!
To remain a constituent member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, AAAP needs to showcase that we have the required threshold of members who are also AVMA members. Please consider joining the AVMA or renewing your membership.
Being a constituent member of the AVMA provides AAAP and its members benefits that impact the veterinary profession and poultry industry. This includes:
- Having two representatives representing the poultry sector within the AVMA House of Delegates.
- Getting access to the AVMA Governmental Relations Division, which influences Congress on legislation.
- Providing representatives on AVMA committees which influence AVMA's positions on topics such as antimicrobial usage, animal welfare, and telemedicine.
That's not even including the tangible benefits AVMA members receive, such as access to insurance, retirement benefits, professional publications, career services, crisis management resources, and more. The AVMA is AAAP's vehicle to influencing policy decisions for the veterinary profession and advocating for the poultry industry, so it is vital that AAAP members join the AVMA.
Click the button below to join or renew your AVMA membership!

We would like to highlight our AAAP Emerging Leaders and other members who attended the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference. Dr. Alexandra Whitfield and Dr. Jake Carlson were AAAP’s chosen Emerging Leaders, who are seen in the photo joined by other AAAP members: Dr. Emily Frye (representing Penn State as a Poultry Resident), Dr. Kate Barger Weathers (our current Primary Delegate on the AVMA House of Delegates), Dr. Suzanne McComb (AAAP Executive Vice President), and Dr. Jose Linares (AAAP President-Elect).

AAAP is proud to be a constituent allied veterinary organization of the AVMA! Thanks to this partnership, AAAP gets representation on the AVMA House of Delegates to advocate for poultry needs in the veterinary world. In addition, AAAP has 17 members serving on 11 different AVMA committees and panels. We are proud that the poultry sector is represented in the following committees and panels: the Animal Agriculture Liaison Committee, the Animal Welfare Committee, the Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee, the Committee on Antimicrobials, the Committee on Disaster and Emergency Issues, the Committee on Environmental Issues, the Convention Education Program Committee, the Food Safety Advisory Committee, the Legislative Advisory Committee, the Panel on Depopulation, and the Panel on Humane Slaughter. These members are crucial in offering the poultry industry's input on important matters, including the outbreak of HPAI.
