Greetings AAAP Members,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Annual Meeting in Orlando Florida. It was great to see old friends and colleagues and meet new people and students from all over the world. You could feel the excitement and energy in the air at the meeting with discussions occurring during the poster session, inside and outside scientific sessions and celebrating members and students at the awards banquet.

We have new faces on the AAAP staff, and they handled the meeting with grace and patience. A big thanks to Bob, Ben, Mohammed, Willow and Lauren for making the meeting run smoothly!! Another big change is a new EVP, Dr. Ken Opengart. Dr. Suzanne McComb did a wonderful and amazing job as EVP for 10 years. Be sure to thank both of them for their service to the industry and AAAP.

Students are the next generation of poultry medicine veterinarians, scientists, academic leaders, allied professionals and supporting their interest in poultry is what our Foundation does extremely well. Be sure to support the Foundation Scholarship program with your donations. There are 2 areas that we are trying to fully fund but you can donate to any of them. With changes in the student loan program, the need is greater now than ever. A big thank you to Dr. Sara Throne who has been the Foundation President for 3 years and now Dr. Andrea Zedek who will be President for the next 3 years. The time and effort spent to support our students is very appreciated.

It is both humbling and exciting to begin this new chapter as Executive Vice President of AAAP. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me and especially appreciative of the opportunity to serve an organization that has played such an important role in my own professional journey.

AAAP has helped shape my scientific foundation and professional development while connecting me with mentors, colleagues, and friends who have influenced my career in ways I could never have anticipated. Over the years, I have seen    firsthand the tremendous value AAAP provides to our profession through scientific advancement, continuing education, mentorship, collaboration, and service. Its greatest strength, however, may be the community it creates by bringing together people from academia, industry, and government who share a commitment to advancing poultry health and well-being.

The AAAP Foundation supports the future of our profession by creating opportunities for students, young scientists, and veterinarians through scholarships, awards, and educational programs, while also recognizing the outstanding contributions of established members through awards honoring excellence in research and service. I have personally experienced the impact of the Foundation during my career, first as a young professional and award recipient and later as a donor and supporter. I look forward to helping expand its reach and impact in the years ahead.

Dear AAAP Colleagues,

I am honored to begin my term as the AAAP Foundation President and I look forward to continuing the Foundation’s vision of “building a legacy by supporting education, creating experiences and recognizing excellence in the poultry industry.” I would like to thank Sara Throne, our outgoing President, for all of her hard work and leadership during the past 3 years.

It was great to see so many AAAP members in Orlando and to recognize the scholarship, grant and award winners at our annual Awards Luncheon. We were able to award over $120,000 to undergraduate, veterinary and graduate students in 2026—a remarkable achievement! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of the AAAP member donors and corporate sponsors who made this possible.

The AAAP Foundation would like to express a sincere "thank you" to Dr. Sara Throne for 6 years of dedicated service as President-Elect, and then President, of the AAAP Foundation

During her tenure, Dr. Throne was instrumental in crafting the current Foundation mission and vision statements, revamping the Foundation procedures manual, and increasing the number of endowed Foundation Scholarships. She also led the recent effort to fully fund the Dr. Cal Anthony Externship Grant, which will financially support veterinary students as they obtain practical experience and knowledge of the poultry industry.

We greatly appreciate Dr. Throne's leadership, commitment, and significant efforts on behalf of the AAAP Foundation. Her contributions to the Foundation, which have fostered stronger relationships and career growth among the talented individuals who benefit from the Foundation's ongoing initiatives, have been invaluable to our organization and the poultry industry as a whole.

A great way to support the AAAP Foundation is to donate to one of our scholarship or externship grant awards. AAAP named scholarships are given in perpetuity and honor past members of the AAAP and the poultry industry, while externship grants provide funding to allow students to gain practical experiences within the poultry industry.

The AAAP Foundation Guilds recognize AAAP members for their donations to the AAAP Foundation. Donors are given unique pins for each donor level they achieve, through donations to support AAAP Foundation scholarships and awards. Since their inception in 2018, over 110 AAAP members have qualified for the AAAP Foundation Guilds, by making cumulative donations at the following levels:

Diamond Guild - $20,000
Platinum Guild - $10,000
Gold Feather Guild - $5,000
Donor Guild - $1,000

Students are the future of our association. An AAAP priority is to foster the career development of students and help them establish the long-term collaborative relationships that will make AAAP their professional home. That's why we established the AAAP Travel Grant for Veterinary and Undergraduate Students, to help defray AAAP Annual Meeting travel expenses.

If you are currently pursuing a DVM or undergraduate degree who wants to attend the AAAP Annual Meeting, be sure to apply! The deadline to apply is April 1. PhD or MS students are welcome to apply for the Poultry Graduate Student Travel Grant.

How many awards are given out are based on the amount of money in the award fund, so if you want to support student members, be sure to donate. This award will provide opportunities to foster the career development of students, as well as help them establish long-term collaborative relationships within the poultry industry.

The AAAP Foundation is launching a new philanthropic initiative to donate valuable poultry health resources to students, researchers, and institutions who need them most. Particularly in developing regions where access is limited.

We're asking for your help: Do you know of a university, veterinary program, research institution, or minority-serving institution anywhere in the world that could benefit from these materials?

What we're donating:
Complete print runs of Avian Diseases journal, volumes 58-67 (2014-2023), including all supplemental issues
A Practical Guide to Managing Risk in Poultry Production (2017)
Isolation, Identification, and Characterization of Avian Pathogens (2016)
Avian Disease Manual (Spanish Edition, 2013)

These resources represent a decade of published research and practical guidance for the global poultry health community

One Request: To keep this program sustainable, we ask that the recipient organization or a sponsor cover the cost of shipping.

Thank you for helping us extend the reach of AAAP's work to colleagues around the world.

Avian Diseases has now published two issues in 2026, and the third issue will be released shortly. In these first two issues, we published 19 Original Articles, 4 Research Notes, and 6 Case Reports. In these two issues of 2026, 13 of the 29 articles are Open Access, which is increasing the revenue linked to the journal and will hopefully enhance the global visibility of Avian Diseases.

Report from: Karen Grogan, Delegate AAAP and Michelle Kromm, Alternate Delegate AAAP

The AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) met in January (Chicago) and July (Anaheim) to discuss important matters related to AVMA strategy, AVMA officer elections, and selected topics facing our profession. The HOD is the main legislative body for the review, debate and voting on proposals related to AVMA policies so that clear guidance is provided for veterinarians and the practice of veterinary medicine.

Membership in the AVMA is strong and growing with >111,000 members, which exceeded the membership goal for 2025 of 110,600. The AVMA has continued to make steady progress on the profession’s top policy initiatives amid a challenging political landscape. Efforts are focused on the Farm Bill, Rural Veterinary Action Plan and Rural Veterinary Workforce Act. The AVMA PAC allows AVMA and veterinarians to build relationships with elected officials. Money contributed by veterinarians (via the PAC) is used to open doors & start conversations on issues related to veterinary medicine.

For more information on the other items voted on by the HOD as well as general AVMA information, see the full report here:

View AVMA Report

As you renew your association memberships this Fall, please remember to renew your AVMA membership. AAAP needs to maintain a threshold of AVMA members to continue to meet the requirements for being a constituent allied veterinary organization, with the rights to vote in the HOD and to have representation on AVMA councils and committees.

So that the AAAP can maintain its recognition as an allied veterinary association of the AVMA, we need your support!

To continue as a constituent member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the AAAP must demonstrate that we meet the required membership threshold of members who are also AVMA members. We encourage you to consider joining the AVMA or renewing your current membership.

Maintaining constituent membership with the AVMA provides AAAP and its members with valuable opportunities that support the veterinary profession and poultry industry. These include:

  • Having two representatives who represent the poultry sector within the AVMA House of Delegates.

  • Access to the AVMA Governmental Relations Division, which advocates before Congress on legislation affecting the veterinary profession.

  • Representation on AVMA committees that help shape the organization's positions on important issues, including antimicrobial use, animal welfare, and telemedicine.

In addition to these opportunities, AVMA membership offers a variety of tangible benefits, including access to insurance and retirement programs, professional publications, career resources, crisis management support, and more. The AVMA serves as an important avenue for AAAP to participate in policy discussions affecting the veterinary profession and advocate for the poultry industry. For this reason, it is essential that AAAP members maintain their AVMA membership.
