Dear AAAP Members,
As autumn settles in and we reflect on the year so far, I’m filled with gratitude and pride for the remarkable work our AAAP family continues to accomplish. We remain steadfast in our mission to foster collaboration among members to advance science-based knowledge, expertise, and education in poultry health, welfare, and food safety.
Our recent Annual Meeting was a tremendous success. The energy, collaboration, and innovation shared among attendees reaffirmed AAAP’s role as a leading voice in poultry health. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our organizers, speakers, and participants for making this event a true celebration of our global poultry community.
Through the AAAP Foundation, we proudly awarded scholarships and honors to outstanding students and professionals pursuing careers in poultry medicine. These individuals represent the future of our field, and their passion continues to inspire us all.

Earlier this year in April, we held elections for the Board of Directors, and we are happy to welcome multiple new members. Here are our new Board of Directors!

AAAP would also like to thank former board members Dr. Deirdre Johnson, Dr. Simone Stoute, Dr. Naola Ferguson-Noel, and Dr. Nikolas Faust for their service.
AAAP is constantly working to improve our members' website experiences. Part of that is improving our job and resume board. We recently released a brand new, user-friendly job board, and it's free for AAAP members and Sponsors to use! Non-members will pay a standard listing fee.
You can seamlessly post positions with flexible 30-, 60-, or -90-day visibility options. If the position changes or needs updating, you can easily do so, as well as renew the position if it has not been filled by the deadline. If you are looking for a new role, you can filter by industry, employment type, or location to find your perfect match. Our job board also features a resume bank, so your skills are known to potential employers.
We invite AAAP members and Sponsors to utilize this free tool. You can access the job board through your member profile today.

Want to stay up to date on everything AAAP? Consider following us on social media. We post about recent updates in the poultry industry, upcoming webinars/courses, and information on the annual meeting and scholarships. Following our social media channels is a surefire way to stay involved in the association.
AAAP has also recently joined Instagram at @amer_assoc_avian_path! Be sure to follow us and help increase our reach!

Our members are the heart of AAAP. The American Association of Avian Pathologists is proud to have over 1100 members from all corners of the globe, and we value everything they bring to our association.
We hope you will continue to be a part of the AAAP community we've built and renew your membership. Starting in 2026, dues for full, associate, and student members will increase. This is to accommodate inflation-related expenses and ensure continued support for our profession. Full and associate member dues will increase from $220/year to $250/year, while student member dues will rise from $20/year to $25/year. The AAAP Board carefully considered this decision, and this was done so AAAP can continue addressing the evolving needs of the poultry profession and its members.

To foster relationships with external groups and organizations who interface directly with the media and public, AAAP endeavors to share its expertise as poultry health professionals with these groups as well as understand and support the work that these organizations do. Outreach liaisons will serve on allied group committees as representatives of AAAP, with the purpose of conveying AAAP’s positions and interests as the leading organization on poultry health, welfare, and food safety.
We thank the following liaisons for their dedication and support in their respective committees:
- Animal Agriculture Alliance (AAA) - Dr. Donald Ritter

Hall of Honor Inductee

Dr. A. Gregorio Rosales was inducted into the AAAP Hall of Honor. Drs. Raymond Bankowski, Henry Adler, and L. Dwight Schwartz (all deceased) were also inducted. The Hall of Honor recognizes a member of the AAAP who has 15 or more years of membership of the AAAP and has made significant contributions to the advancement of poultry health and contributions to the AAAP.

Students are the future of our association. An AAAP priority is to foster the career development of students and help them establish the long-term collaborative relationships that will make AAAP their professional home. That's why we established the Student Travel Awards, to help defray AAAP Annual Meeting travel expenses.
If you are currently pursuing a DVM or undergraduate degree who wants to attend the AAAP Annual Meeting, be sure to apply! The deadline to apply is April 1. PhD or MS students are welcome to apply for the Avian Biosciences Travel Scholarship.
How many awards are given out are based on the amount of money in the award fund, so if you want to support student members, be sure to donate. This award will provide opportunities to foster the career development of students, as well as help them establish long-term collaborative relationships within the poultry industry.

Dear AAAP Members,
It was wonderful to see so many in Portland for our Annual AAAP Meeting and especially great to have so many in attendance at the AAAP Foundation Awards Luncheon to recognize and honor colleagues.
The last few newsletters I have taken the opportunity to highlight our scholarship and externship program which has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade thanks to your generosity.
This fall, I would like to highlight our AAAP Foundation Awards with the hope that by learning more about them you will think of colleagues and peers that meet the criteria. The awards committee has worked very hard these last few years to streamline the nomination process while maintaining the prestige of the awards—so please don’t let the process scare you from making a nomination.

A great way to support the AAAP Foundation is to donate to one of our scholarship or externship awards. AAAP named scholarships are given in perpetuity and honor past members of the AAAP and the poultry industry, while externships provide funding to allow students to gain practical experiences within the poultry industry.
The AAAP Foundation Guilds recognize AAAP members for their donations to the AAAP Foundation. Donors are given unique pins for each donor level they achieve, through donations to support AAAP Foundation scholarships and awards. Since their inception in 2018, over 110 AAAP members have qualified for the AAAP Foundation Guilds, by making cumulative donations at the following levels:
Diamond Guild - $20,000
Platinum Guild - $10,000
Gold Feather Guild - $5,000
Donor Guild - $1,000

All recommendation forms should be submitted with the following format:

Avian Diseases has now published two issues in 2025, and the third issue will be released shortly. In these first two issues, we published 15 Original Articles, 3 Research Notes, 4 Case Reports and 3 Review Articles. The third issue will contain 7 Original Articles, 6 Research Notes and 1 Case Report. In these three issues of 2025, 27 of the 39 articles are Open Access, which is increasing the revenue linked to the journal and will hopefully enhance the global visibility of Avian Diseases.

Congratulations to Dr. Sydney Tuckwiller on becoming a 2025 BioOne Ambassador!
On April 24, BioOne announced the five recipients of the 2025 BioOne Ambassador Award. Of these, Dr. Sydney Kinstler Tuckwiller was selected for her article " Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis Impacts Developmental Notch and Wnt Signaling and Intestinal Morphology in the Small Intestine of Broiler Chickens." Dr. Tuckwiller was nominated by AAAP, and her work was featured in Volume 68, Issue 4 of the Avian Diseases journal. Other authors of this article include: Eric A. Wong, Charles Hofacre, Margie D. Lee, Frederic J. Hoerr, Matthew K. Jones, John J. Maurer.
During her time at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Virginia Tech, Dr. Tuckwiller focused on investigating the most basic of life processes in the hopes of making a better future for animals and consumers through molecular techniques. By using her study as a benchmark for product development, new solutions to raise livestock for public consumption will be created.
When asked about her continuing research goals for the future, Dr. Tuckwiller had this to say:
"In the interest of the industry, I would like to continue investigating other diseases and the manipulation of the microbiome to continue identifying how new products are alleviating illnesses and developing products to accurately address the issues at hand in multiple species."
AAAP congratulates Dr. Tuckwiller on her selection as a BioOne Ambassador and thanks her for her contribution to Avian Diseases. We hope you will take a moment to read her winning summary, as well as the other ambassadors'.

Report from: Kate Barger Weathers, Delegate AAAP and Michelle Kromm, Alternate Delegate AAAP
The AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) met in January (Chicago) and July (Washington DC) to discuss important matters related to AVMA strategy, AVMA officer elections, and selected topics facing our profession. The HOD is the main legislative body for the review, debate and voting on proposals related to AVMA policies so that clear guidance is provided for veterinarians and the practice of veterinary medicine.
The July meeting included the largest AVMA legislative fly-in where HOD delegates met with Congress members or their staff on two important bills for veterinary medicine, Rural Veterinary Workforce Act (S. 1163 / HR 2398) and Combating Illicit Xylazine Act (S.545 / HR 1266).
For more information on the other items voted on by the HOD, see the full report here:
As you renew your association memberships this Fall, please remember to renew your AVMA membership. AAAP needs to maintain a threshold of AVMA members to continue to meet the requirements for being a constituent allied veterinary organization, with the rights to vote in the HOD and to have representation on AVMA councils and committees.

AAAP would like to sincerely thank Dr. Kate Barger Weathers for her 8 years serving this organization in the AVMA House of Delegates. During her time in the HOD, Kate was highly regarded by our colleagues in the Allied Caucus and in the HOD for her thoughtful approach to matters before the HOD. Kate was especially instrumental when policies came before the HOD related to matters sensitive to food animal veterinarians, notably recent resolutions concerning depopulation due to her expertise in animal welfare.
Thank you for your service, Kate! Good luck as you continue your leadership journey on the AAAP Board of Directors.

In order for AAAP to continue to be recognized as an allied veterinary association of the AVMA, we need your help!
To remain a constituent member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, AAAP needs to showcase that we have the required threshold of members who are also AVMA members. Please consider joining the AVMA or renewing your membership.
Being a constituent member of the AVMA provides AAAP and its members benefits that impact the veterinary profession and poultry industry. This includes:
- Having two representatives representing the poultry sector within the AVMA House of Delegates.
- Getting access to the AVMA Governmental Relations Division, which influences Congress on legislation.
- Providing representatives on AVMA committees which influence AVMA's positions on topics such as antimicrobial usage, animal welfare, and telemedicine.
That's not even including the tangible benefits AVMA members receive, such as access to insurance, retirement benefits, professional publications, career services, crisis management resources, and more. The AVMA is AAAP's vehicle to influencing policy decisions for the veterinary profession and advocating for the poultry industry, so it is vital that AAAP members join the AVMA.
